Branded nameservers change the names clients see. Resilience still comes from the authoritative infrastructure and correct delegation.

A name, not a new network

Branded nameservers can use the provider authoritative service. Branding does not by itself add geographic distribution, independent failure domains, or stronger mitigation.

The delivery model

How it works

Vanity nameservers

  1. 01NameChoose the branded NS hostnames.
  2. 02RegisterCreate required address or glue records.
  3. 03DelegatePoint the zone at reachable authority.
Conceptual model for this configuration. The actual path depends on provider policy and application behavior.

Glue is the outage you forget

A and AAAA glue at the parent must match. Broken glue looks like a DNS outage even when authority is healthy. Monitor delegation.

Two names, shared infrastructure

Follow parent-registry norms — typically at least two NS names — even when they share Anycast infrastructure.

Most SaaS only needs CNAME onboarding

Customer domains usually CNAME to you. Vanity NS is for when you are the authority they delegate to. Do not build it by default.

Validate before production

Check glue at the parent when a nameserver is inside the delegated zone. Query every nameserver address directly and compare zone data. Plan address changes across both parent glue and authoritative host records.

  • Record the configuration and expected result before changing traffic.
  • Keep evidence of the test and a working rollback for the previous behavior.
